Which Course Is Right For Me?

Let’s make this very simple. There are two main career tracks for a medical coder to take, and as such we have two courses for you to choose from.

Outpatient Coding

You want to choose this option if you are looking for flexibility and if the freedom of working from home appeals to you.

Outpatient Coding is also called Physician-Based Coding. But it really means the same thing. Basically, it is coding the records for patients who went to a clinic, doctor’s office, urgent care, or other facility for treatment.

Outpatient Medical Coding Course

Coding Industry Basics
In this introductory course to the field of Medical Coding, you will learn how Medical Coding is a vital component of the healthcare industry, how Medical Coding has evolved, and what opportunities exist for quality medical coders.
Foundations of Medical Language
The comprehensive medical terminology course will teach you the individual parts of medical words and how they are constructed, as well as some of the most common terms used in major medical specialties and the medical office setting.
Anatomy & Disease
This course will help you understand basic human body functions and identify the anatomical locations, structures, and physiological functions of the main components of each major system of the human body. You will also understand common diseases and disease tests and diagnosis methods for each body system.
Pharmacology
This Pharmacology course will teach you the basic pharmacologics, including drug actions and effects, absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and drug classifications and formulary. This course also gives you the opportunity to see and reference pharmaceutical terms in the context of medical reports.
Health Data Management
This Health Data Management Course will teach you to understand the documentation, processes, and technology that help the healthcare industry operate. You will learn about healthcare documentation and the ethics of document maintenance, healthcare industry structure, and medical reimbursement.
ICD-10-CM Coding
The ICD-10-CM Coding Course will introduce you to the ICD-10-CM codes, including code structure and conventions, general coding guidelines, diagnostic coding and reporting guidelines, and chapter-specific official coding guidelines. This expansive, 27-module course gives you everything you need before you begin actually coding.
CPT® & HCPCS Procedural Coding
This CPT® and HCPCS Procedural Coding course will teach you how to read documentation from different specialties and apply CPT® and HCPCS codes for services, procedures, and equipment. You will learn the coding procedures and guidelines for each of the body systems and will practice applying codes throughout this interactive course.
ChartWize® Outpatient Virtual Internship
There are a lot of choices in medical coding education, and most of them do a good job preparing you to sit for a national certification test. However, no other program has a virtual internship—the practical application of everything you have learned by coding actual medical records. This proprietary software program was developed by CareerWize to provide real records for students to practice coding on.
ICD-10-CM Outpatient Coding Examination
The CareerWize ICD-10-CM Outpatient Coding Exam tests students’ knowledge in foundational medicine, including terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease, and health information data. It also assesses skill in properly identifying and ordering diagnosis and procedural codes for physician-based records. Satisfactory performance on the Careerwize Outpatient Coding Exam qualifies students for a Certification of Graduation from Careerwize and demonstrates readiness to sit for a national certification test.
Careerwize Test Prep Tool (6-months Access)
The CareerWize Test Prep tool is a gamified approach to prepare students to sit for a national outpatient coder exam. You can take practice tests over and over again, removing questions you have mastered. Access is for 6 months.
Graduate Support Package
Our Virtual Internships prepare CareerWize students for the rigors of employment. However, our programs also include support services to help get you hired. These services include:
  • Resume Review
  • Personal Consultation
  • Careerwize Employer Introductions
  • Lifetime Graduate Support Hotline

Inpatient Coding

You want to choose this option if you're looking for a career path with upward mobility and a greater income potential.

Inpatient Coding is also called Hospital-Based Coding. This is coding complicated, detailed records for patients who were admitted to the hospital.
